Bukit Lawang Jungle Adventure

5 Days Jungle Trekking Itinerary

Discover the true wilderness of Gunung Leuser National Park with this unforgettable 5 day Bukit Lawang jungle trekking experience. Sleep under the stars, spot incredible wildlife, cross rivers, explore hidden jungle trails, and return by the famous jungle taxi tubing ride.

Day 1

Enter the Heart of the Rainforest

After breakfast, your guide will pick you up at your guesthouse around 9:00 AM to begin your jungle adventure.

The trek starts with a scenic walk along the river before heading uphill through local trails and rubber plantations toward the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park.

Once inside the rainforest, you may have the chance to spot semi-wild Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat. Watching these incredible primates swing through the trees or care for their babies is a truly unforgettable experience.

Along the way, you’ll stop for a refreshing break with delicious tropical fruits, then continue trekking to panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Bohorok River valley and the surrounding jungle.

After lunch in the rainforest, continue deeper into the jungle while searching for other amazing wildlife such as Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Long-tailed Macaques, Pig-tailed Macaques, and sometimes even monitor lizards.

Around 4:00 PM, you will arrive at your first jungle campsite, usually located near a river or waterfall. Relax with a cup of tea or coffee, enjoy a swim, and watch your guides prepare dinner.

In the evening, enjoy a freshly cooked jungle dinner with rice, curry, vegetables, and local dishes. Spend the night relaxing around the campfire before sleeping in your jungle tent under the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 2

Deeper Into the Wild Jungle

Wake up to the natural sounds of the rainforest and enjoy a homemade jungle breakfast surrounded by nature.

After breakfast, continue trekking for around 3 hours into more remote sections of the jungle. This part of the route offers a more authentic rainforest experience, far from the busier trekking trails.

Keep your eyes open for more wildlife, giant tropical trees, medicinal plants, and hidden jungle paths. Your guide will share local knowledge about the rainforest ecosystem and its incredible biodiversity.

Stop for lunch in the middle of the jungle, where you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and sounds of the forest all around you.

In the afternoon, continue walking for another approximately 3 hours toward your second campsite. Depending on the location, you may camp beside a riverbank, stream, or waterfall.

After a refreshing swim, enjoy another traditional dinner prepared by your guides. Relax by the campfire and listen to jungle stories before resting for your next day of trekking.

Day 3

True Rainforest Expedition

After breakfast at camp, begin your third trekking day with a deeper exploration of the rainforest for around 4 to 6 hours.

Today’s route offers excellent opportunities to discover more of the unique wildlife living inside Gunung Leuser National Park. In addition to orangutans and macaques, you may also encounter Silver Leaf Monkeys, White-handed Gibbons, Siamangs, and if you are lucky, even the elusive Slow Loris.

Bird lovers may also have the chance to hear or spot fascinating jungle birds such as the Hornbill or the spectacular Great Argus.

During the trek, you’ll stop for lunch and fresh tropical fruit while enjoying the raw beauty of the rainforest.

Later in the day, continue to your next campsite where you can swim in the river, relax, and enjoy another evening surrounded by untouched nature.

After dinner around the campfire, you may choose to rest or join an optional night trek to discover the hidden nocturnal life of the jungle.

Day 4

Waterfalls, River Crossings & Jungle Knowledge

After breakfast, today’s adventure takes you even deeper into the rainforest to explore some of its hidden and more untouched areas.

This day is full of variety, including walks through small rivers, creeks, jungle paths, and hidden forest corners. You may also have the chance to swim in beautiful natural pools or cool off under a waterfall.

Enjoy lunch in the middle of the jungle and fully embrace the peaceful atmosphere of this extraordinary environment.

As you continue trekking, your guide will also explain more about the rainforest’s incredible flora, including medicinal plants and useful jungle survival knowledge passed down through generations.

By late afternoon, arrive at your final campsite. Relax with tea or coffee while your guides prepare dinner and the camp for your last night in the jungle.

If you still have energy, another optional night trek can be arranged to search for nocturnal species and experience the jungle after dark one more time.

Day 5

Final Trek & Jungle Taxi Return

Wake up for your final morning in the rainforest and enjoy breakfast surrounded by the sounds of nature.

On this last day, the trekking route can be adjusted depending on your energy level, weather conditions, and preferences. This gives you a more relaxed and flexible final jungle experience.

By now, you will have gained a deeper understanding of the jungle, its wildlife, and even some traditional jungle survival skills.

After your final lunch in the rainforest, it’s time for one of the most exciting parts of the journey — the famous jungle taxi ride.

Using large rubber tubes, you’ll float back down the Bohorok River toward Bukit Lawang in a fun and refreshing tubing experience.

At the end of the trek, your guide will accompany you back to your guesthouse, usually arriving around 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
